Day 18:  Down the Other Side

End point:  44 20.937 N, 121 36.312 W

Noisy neighbors, wind, rain, lightning and thunder, all conspired unsuccessfully to deprive us of sleep throughout our last night camped beside the Metolius River.  We left camp before 7:30 a.m. and found our starting point near Suttle Lake.  There was a high overcast for a change, which had kept the overnight temperature at a more moderate level.  No jacket was required for the second consecutive day.

At 4 miles we passed the road we had just driven out of, the road to Camp Sherman.  At this point we also crossed from Jefferson County into Deschutes County as the road bore southeast under the southern base of Black Butte.  Two miles later we passed, on our right, the entrance to Black Butte Ranch, an extensive development of vacation homes and golf courses buried deep in the forest.  The highway continued southeast in an almost-straight line.  We could see my Camry 1.5 miles before we reached it.

We returned to camp and packed everything up.  Our new location was a KOA campground about 4 miles east of Sisters.  The price was higher for a tent site ($35, highway robbery), but the showers were actually civilized.  We set up the tent and ate nearly-inedible pre-made sandwiches from the camp store, rationalizing that we would drive back to Sisters for dinner.

We played 1 game of cribbage, which I won, before giving up because of the wind which kept blowing the cards off the table.  We worked for awhile on some office work Joe had brought along, then drove to Sisters and had dinner at El Rancho Grande.  The burrito was good.  I would give this place a 7 out of 10.  Back at KOA, we managed to play more cribbage.  The pendulum swung once again, and I ended the day leading 19-17 after the second skunk of the trip.  We then sat in the pick-up after dark and switched the radio back and forth between the Dodgers/Rockies and Mariners/Devil Rays games.  The M’s won in the 10th on Sexson’s grand slam.  About 3 minutes later the Dodgers won their 11th straight to send us to sleep happy.
